The Skills Tracker records which household members can actually use each kit on your BeReady plan, plus eight core Foundations skills. Tap any cell to mark where a member stands, from Not yet to Used it or Practiced. A summary line counts the kits and foundation skills your household holds, so gaps show at a glance.
A kit only helps once a real person knows how to use it. The tracker is where equipment becomes capability: it pulls the strongest kit matches from your plan, adds the Foundations skills, and lets you mark where each member stands.
Finding the tracker
Open BeReady > Skills Tracker, go straight to your Skills Tracker, or follow the tracker links inside your plan. The page works from your most recent plan. Its rows come from that plan's kit recommendations, and its columns come from that plan's household roster.

At the top, a summary line tells you where the household stands. Once someone has used a kit, it reads like "Your household has built capability on 3 of 7 kits." Before that, it reads "Your tracker carries 7 kits ready for someone in your household to learn." Either way it ends with "Your household holds 2 of 8 foundation skills."
Marking kits your household has used
The first grid, Skills from your kits, lists the kits your plan ranks as Better or Best matches for your household. Each row is a kit, each column is a member, and each cell is a small pill showing where that member stands.
- Tap a cell. The dialog asks "Has [member] used this to completion?"
- Pick one of three answers: Not yet, Learning or Used it. Pick the answer that reads true today, and update it anytime.
- Check the date. Your choice saves right away and the pill updates. When you mark Used it, the date is recorded. The dialog footer shows it as "Recordedā¦", and hovering the pill shows how long ago.
The summary counts per kit, not per person. One member marking Used it counts the whole household as covered for that kit.
The eight Foundations skills
The second grid, Foundations competencies, holds "the eight skill groups from your readiness map". Every household gets the same eight, whatever kits its plan recommends. Each one carries a line describing what the person can do once they've learned it.
| Group | Skill | What the person can do |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Generator Safety | Run a generator safely (carbon monoxide, placement, fuel), reset breakers, and decide what to power first. |
| Water | Filter & Purify | Turn questionable water into safe drinking water by filtering, boiling, or chemically treating it. |
| Food | Growing Food | Grow, raise, or harvest food and cook it from raw ingredients without prepared groceries. |
| Communications | Family Comms Plan | Reach your family when cell networks are down, using a written plan and a backup radio. |
| Fuel | Safe Fuel Handling | Store, stabilize, and handle fuel safely, and operate a chainsaw to process firewood. |
| Medical | CPR & First Aid | Give first aid, perform CPR, and control serious bleeding to hold someone stable until help arrives. |
| Safety | Shelter or Evacuate | Decide whether to shelter in place or evacuate, and carry out either calmly and safely. |
| Transport | Routes & Field Repairs | Navigate without GPS using a map, and make basic roadside repairs to keep moving. |
Tap a cell here and the dialog asks "Does [member] have competency in this skill?" These cells offer four answers instead of three: Not yet, Learning, Learned and Practiced.
What's the difference between Learned and Practiced?
Learned means the member holds the skill, and Practiced means they hold it and have drilled it. Both count toward your household total of foundation skills, and both save the date you mark them. Learning doesn't count yet.
A foundation skill counts once any member reaches Learned or Practiced. That includes members who have since left your plan's roster, as long as you haven't erased their history.
Foundation marks also flow back into your plan. When a member reaches Learned or Practiced, their name appears in the Competence square for that outcome on Your readiness map. That map sits in the Foundations section of plans that include one.
Why is a kit missing from my tracker?
A kit appears only when your most recent plan ranks it Better or Best, and only while it's available in our catalog. Kits ranked lower don't get a row. If none qualify, the page shows "Your tracker activates the first time a kit reaches Better or above." In that state the Foundations grid waits too, until at least one kit qualifies.
When you regenerate your plan and a kit drops off, its history isn't lost. It moves to a collapsed Past recommendations section at the bottom, which lists the members who marked it. Click Show to open it. A kit that's no longer in our catalog is labeled "kit no longer available".
What happens to the record when someone leaves the household?
Their history stays on the tracker until you choose to erase it. Click Forget history by their name to remove it. A confirmation asks "Forget [name]'s skill history?" and explains that this permanently removes every completion row tied to that name, while the rest of your household's history stays untouched. There is no undo. Choose Keep history to back out.
The tracker files each record under the member's name as it appears in your plan. Keep names the same between plans, so a member's history stays in one column.
Other states you might see
- No plan yet. "Your tracker starts when your first plan does." Use Start your plan, or the quiet Run a drill link.
- No household members on the plan. "Add your household roster so the tracker has columns to draw." Use Open your plan.
- A save fails. The dialog shows a short message and the pill goes back to its previous state. Try again; nothing is left half-saved.
- On a phone. The grids stack into one card per member, with their statuses listed beneath, so marking works without a wide table.
- Drill runs. Runs you record in the drill library show on the drills themselves, not on this page. See running a drill.
- Tribe members. If you share skill progress through My Tribe, a Your tribe is tracking too card can list names marked "Sharing skill progress". It doesn't show their individual skills. See what tribe members can see.
Closing a gap, one weekend at a time
A parent opens the tracker after a plan refresh and sees the water-filter kit at "Not yet" for everyone. They spend a weekend afternoon walking their teenager through it, then mark the teen Used it. The next time the power goes out, they already know who in the house can run it.
Another household treats the Foundations grid as a quiet checklist. One adult is Practiced on CPR & First Aid, and the other is only at Learning. Seeing that gap in plain view is what finally gets the second adult signed up for a class.
The tracker sits at the practice end of preparedness, where kits from your plan and items from your supply list become things your family can actually do. To practice as a household, open the drill library.
